Crossword CoveThese days, crossword puzzles are no longer found in just newspapers; they can easily be played on the Internet! Finding crosswords online is not a difficult thing to do, so you can play right away. If you don’t know which crosswords to play, you should try Crossword Cove.

Overview of Crossword Cove

The game is one of the many you can play online thanks to Pogo.com. You can play the puzzle of the day or one of the 90 free crossword puzzles available at any time. However, Crossword Cove isn’t just your ordinary crossword game; it has some special twists added by Pogo.

How to play

Unlike other crosswords, the clues of the words you need to guess aren’t in a separate section that can be read right away. Instead, you first have to click on a square to choose a clue. To switch between the Across and Down clues, you just click on the same square or use the space bar. However, if you are used to seeing the clues in a separate location, you can do so. You have the option to have an expanded clue list on the screen. Switching the view of this expanded clue list can be done by using the rotate button. You can view it either side by side or top and bottom.

If you already know the answer or you just want to guess, type your answer or guess. To modify or delete letters, you can use either the backspace key or the delete button.

On a Crossword Cove grid, there are stars in some of the boxes. These stars are powerups that you can collect by correctly answering their corresponding crossword clues. Once a star powerup is collected, it will be saved at the powerup counter. If you choose to use a star powerup, once activated, it will show you the letters that are most common in your current puzzle.

Need more help? You can use the hint button to see the answer of a clue, but the letters are jumbled. You can rearrange them to help you guess the answer. If the hint button isn’t enough to help you out, it will be replaced with the solve button. Clicking the solve button will reveal the right answer and will be automatically typed in its respective boxes.

When you have finished a puzzle or if you already want to quit, click the all done button. To know your final score, click the submit button. If you want to know your errors, click the check answers button. If you need a break from puzzle solving, just click the save button and you can play your saved game at any time you wish.

Scoring and bonuses

Depending on the difficulty level of a puzzle, the starting score of each letter can be 12, 15, or 18 points. If you use the hint button, you only get half of your intended score. On the other hand, if you use the solve button you don’t get any points.

There are different ways of acquiring bonuses. Upon completion of a puzzle, you get 300 tokens. If you complete a puzzle in less than 15 minutes, you also get 300 tokens. The more star powerups you save in the powerup counter, the more tokens you get. An unused powerup will result in an extra 100 tokens. The fewer hints you use, the more tokens you also get, and this can range from 0-500. If no hints are used, you automatically get 500 tokens. If you are able to finish the featured puzzle of the day, you get 200 tokens.

Challenge yourself

Another difference of Crossword Cove from other usual crossword puzzles is you can customize some of its features. You can choose the level of your puzzle, starting with easy and working your way to the more difficult levels, or you can head straight on to the harder levels first if you really want to challenge yourself. You also have the option to keep the timer on or off. If you don’t want any pressure, then turn the timer off. However, you get bonuses every time you complete puzzles quickly.

Ranks and badges

Pogo games allow you to earn ranks and badges, and Crossword Cove is no exception. Earning them can motivate you to play more games and improve your scores.

Whether you’re a crossword aficionado or someone who simply wants to experience playing a different kind of crossword puzzle, Crossword Cove is what you should try.

The Book of Treasures

August 2, 2013 | | Add a Comment

The Book of TreasuresIf you love words and adventure, you will definitely enjoy the game, The Book of Treasures! No, it isn’t a title of a book or a movie. It is a word game that is as exciting as a mystery thriller and as fun and fulfilling as Text Twist. It satisfies both your imagination and word building skills. It’s like solving word puzzles within an adventure-filled movie, but you’re actually using the Internet to play it.

Introduction to the Book of Treasures

The game originated from Games.com and its lead character is a female librarian, Jessica West. She works at an ancient library that is believed to be the location of a long lost Egyptian manuscript. One day, she finds 35 envelopes in a secret room in the west tower of the library. Each envelope contains six letters. Curiosity got the better of Jessica, so she decided to go on a mission to learn where the lost Egyptian manuscript is hidden so she opens one envelope every time the library closes. Legend has it that the manuscript was separated into pieces and every piece was hidden in different ancient books that are also in the library. Each completed puzzle envelope reveals a piece of the manuscript, so you better start helping Jessica and play the Book of Treasures!

How to play

When the six letters of an envelope are revealed, you begin forming words with them. You can either type out words or click on the letters to spell words. The words must be at least three letters long. Click the enter button to submit a word. If a word is valid, it will appear in one of the books located above the blanks where you input letters. If you need to erase letters, just press the backspace key or the clear button. In addition, click the shuffle button if you want to rearrange the letters to help you form more words.

There are usually 4 stacks of books with varying lengths. Each stack represents a certain word length: 3, 4, 5, and 6. The number of books in each stack is the number of words you can submit for each word length. For example, there are only 3 books in the stack of 4-letter words. Once you fill those 3 books with words and you play another 4-letter word, it can no longer be accommodated by the stack, so you have to submit words with different lengths. In addition, if a word you submit is invalid, you will be informed about it.

You are not required to fill up all the books in every stack. However, you are encouraged to do so because one of the books is the golden book. The golden book is only revealed at the end of each round. If you managed to guess a word that is written in the spine of the golden book, a piece of the missing Egyptian manuscript will be shown, so you should guess as many words as you can!

Scoring

The scores you receive will depend on the length of the words you submit, so the longer a word, the higher score you’ll get. The following is the list of scores in The Book of Treasures:

3-letter word: 50 points

4-letter word: 125 points

5-letter word: 200 points

6-letter word: 400 points

Moreover, depending on the game mode you’re playing, you are awarded an additional 30 seconds for every 6-letter word you submit. Hence, you have more time to try and get all the words and have the chance to receive an extra 1000 points when you do so. In addition, if you get the word in the golden book, you also get another 1000 points. There are also multipliers that appear every time you submit a valid word, so guess away!

Game modes

The Book of Treasures has three game modes: Quest, Endless, and Timeless modes.

In Quest Mode, this is where you help Jessica West find the missing manuscript. You are given only two minutes to submit as many words as you can with the 6 letters in each envelope. Because it is a quest, it has a limited number of levels at 35. The quest ends when you complete the separated pieces of the manuscript and join them together.

In Endless Mode, there is no quest involved, so there are no manuscript pieces to be found. However, this mode is great for those who do not want the Book of Treasures to end. As the name says, there is an endless number of levels in this mode. You are also given two minutes in this mode.

Finally, in Timeless Mode, you do not have to feel pressured to form words because there is no timer!

Whether you’re the adventurous type or a word game lover, The Book of Treasures lets you experience the best of both worlds.
