Category: Word Games
Word games are some of the most played and downloaded games among any kind of handheld device. They can exercise your spelling, vocabulary, and word-building skills to keep your brain sharp. One of the most well-known word games today is Whirly Word, which was part of the top 10 list of most popular word games for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch in 2010.
Overview of Whirly Word
The publisher and developer Mighty Mighty Good Games released Whirly Word in September 27, 2009, making the game nearly four years old. The aim of the game is pretty simple: form a fixed number of 3 to 6-letter words using only the given 6 letters. The game is similar to Chicktionary minus the chickens, the egg rack, and a timer. Instead of those, there are rows of blank oblongs representing words that have 3-6 letters at the top of the game. Below them are six bigger blank boxes, which will be used for forming words. Finally, below those boxes is a wheel that houses the 6 letters you can play.
Playing Whirl Word is pretty straightforward: you simply have to tap the letters you need to use to form a word and every letter you tap will appear on the blank boxes above the wheel. When you have formed a word, tap the “Enter” button, which is easily seen at the center of the letter wheel. Each valid word you form will then appear on its corresponding row at the top of the screen. Therefore, it is easy to monitor the words you have already played and the number of words that you can still guess.
Puzzle progress and scoring
You do not need to find the word or words that use up all six letters, but if you want to progress more quickly and easily move on to the next letter puzzle, then it is advisable to form those 6-letter words. At the very top of your screen, way above the blank oblongs, there is a progress bar. Every time you submit a valid word, the bar progresses until you reach a certain point that is marked by a green line. Once you have reached that green line, you can move on to the next puzzle. Moreover, whenever you use all 6 letters in one word, even if that’s the only word you form, you can immediately start solving the next puzzle! There is also no pressure to finish right away because there is no time limit! You can exit the game and go back to the puzzle you’re solving until you get the green light to move on to the next one. In addition, unlike Chicktionary, Whirly Word does not grant you points for every valid word formed. Instead, you just keep progressing until you complete a puzzle and carry on to the next level. Just keep in mind that as you progress, the farther the green line gets in every puzzle.
Whirly Word has two puzzle levels: abridged and tournament. The abridged level is ideal for beginners or players who want to form words that are easily recognized. On the other hand, if you want to be challenged more, then you can go for the tournament level, which has more difficult puzzles and a broader dictionary.
The levels may be different, but they have the same feature when it comes to their dictionaries: you can check the definitions of the words you form, allowing you to broaden your vocabulary. In addition, you can keep track of your achievements on both levels as they are recorded within the game.
There can be times when you get stuck and don’t know what words to form. Don’t panic; there is a special button that you can tap: the “Whirl” button. To whirl means to spin, and that is what will happen to the letter wheel when you use this button. The rotation of the wheel will also change the location of the letters and this can help you see any words you might have missed. There is no limit to using this button so go ahead and abuse it! After all, a change in perspective can go a long way even outside of this word game!
Whirly Word has different color schemes that can suit your every mood while playing it. You also have the option to turn on or remove the background music and sound effects.
Whirly Word can spin your brain around in a fun and educational way, so better download it now!
What word games do you usually play? Are you familiar with Word Scramble, Jumble, Boggle, or Text Twist? If so, it will be easy for you to play and enjoy Word Warp, especially if you like to challenge your word building and vocabulary skills. So you have your tablet or mobile device and you’ve downloaded the game, but are you ready for the Word Warp challenge?
What is Word Warp?
Word Warp is an anagram game that requires you to form as many words as you can from a given set of six letters within a limited time. You will be given points for every correct word you are able to guess. The catch is that you have to correctly guess at least one word that uses all six letters if you want to move on to the next level.
How to play
As mentioned, in each level, you are presented with six letters. On top of those letters are six empty circles or boxes where you can form words. The words must be at least three letters long. As you choose a letter, it goes into an empty space until you form a word. Upon formation of a word, tap or click the “Got it” button. If your word is correct, it will appear in the upper section of your screen where there are blanks that represent the words you can form. These “blanks” are grouped into their respective word lengths, so three-letter word blanks are together, four-letter words are also together, and so forth. Every time you are able to guess a word correctly, it will fill up the blanks that correspond to its number of letters.
Instead of a shuffle button such as the one in Text Twist, Word Warp has a warp button. Use this to rearrange the six letters to possibly view other words that you haven’t formed yet. Sometimes, a different order makes you see words that you were not able to see earlier. There is no limit to using the Warp button, so you can use it as many times as you want.
Another useful button is the Last button, which when used, shows you the last word you played. This is useful when the letter S is included in the six given letters – it will be easier and quicker for you to play the plural forms of nouns or the singular forms of verbs.
Unlike other word games, Word Warp does not limit you to a certain number of minutes; YOU are the one who sets the limit for yourself. That’s right you can set the amount of time you want to find words. You can set a longer time limit to find more words or you can shorten it to challenge yourself even more. You do not have to stress yourself with finishing within the time limit you set because you can still end the game early by using the end button. Or you can stop the time and return where you left off after a while. Whether you have given up or want to continue the game at a later time, there’s no denying that this feature makes the game highly convenient and can a great deal more challenging to play.
Finishing a level
As mentioned earlier, you only complete a level if you get at least one six-letter word. Every time you finish a level, you move on to more difficult ones and gain higher scores. When playing in timed mode, once the time runs out, you will be able to view the words that you have guessed and those that you missed. You can even click on any of the words and be directed to their respective entries in an online dictionary.
Adjusting the settings
You can adjust the settings of the game by using the small letter “I” located at the upper part of the screen. You can change the game’s background and adjust the sound settings. In Word Warp Xtreme, click the settings buttons to make changes.
Word Warp Xtreme
This is the sequel to the original version of the Word Warp game. It features a lot more puzzles, a more extensive dictionary, and a more challenging gaming experience. It also has additional features and game modes.
With Word Warp, you now have an alternative to playing Text Twist or other similar games. It is a fun way to exercise your grey matter and sharpen your vocabulary skills. What are you waiting for? Warp away!
